A health, business incubator and resilience hub coming soon to West Asheville’s Historic Burton Street Neighborhood

WHERE WELLNESS, ENTREPRENEURSHIP & CLIMATE RESILIENCE MEET
Blue Note Junction will be an essential part of Western North Carolina’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. In Asheville’s booming business landscape, it is poised to be both a lucrative commercial real estate model and a flywheel driving benefits to investors, tenants, partner businesses, visitors, and the larger local economy.
BNJ will transform a long-overlooked site in West Asheville’s Historic Burton Street Neighborhood into an off-grid community resilience hub — combining emergency shelter, environmental education, cultural preservation, and local business incubation under one roof.
Building on over 20 years of foundational work within the Historic Burton Street Neighborhood, Hood Huggers International, Peace Gardens & Market, and Asheville Creative Arts are partnering to create a one-of-a-kind health and business incubator within the community. As the neighborhood braces itself for yet another highway expansion, this partnership leans into existing plans and policies to address long-standing needs within our community.

Like many historically African American communities across the U.S., the Burton Street neighborhood in West Asheville has experienced multiple economic, social, and environmental challenges – with the most recent being the third highway expansion that directly impacts this historic community. Couple this with the fact that Black-owned businesses make up just 2.3% of all business ownership nationwide and we’re faced with the unique opportunity to simultaneously uplift a historically African American community and build a platform for cultivating, launching, and supporting Black-owned business – all through a creative commercial real estate model with compounding benefits to the community and surrounding region.
Imagine a space that’s vibrant with diversity; bustling with creative local businesses, artists, and entrepreneurs; alive with healthy living classes and workshops; and exemplary in its ability to heal, rejuvenate, and uplift entire communities through artistic performances, wellness opportunities, and environmental sustainability. Blue Note Junction is envisioned to be an entrepreneurial hub that not only supports the health and wealth of the local BIPOC community but promotes the spiritual, emotional and economic health of the entire city.
